Bring Decorative Print to Life: Q&A with Designer (and Consultant) Lauren Peploe

Have you ever imagined your own bespoke wallpaper, fabric or homeware designs but felt unsure how to make them a reality? My speciality is to bring decorative print to life – helping brands, designers, and entrepreneurs transform their creative visions into beautiful, market-ready patterns for interiors, packaging, and more.

In this Q&A, I’ll share my approach to collaborative design, how I work with clients, and what makes the creative development process so rewarding.

What do you love most about helping clients develop their decorative prints?

The variety! One morning I might be creating floral patterns, by lunch working on brand packaging, and in the afternoon, I’m consulting for a new client. This constant creative shifting keeps my work fresh and exciting.

What really stays with me is the relationships. There’s nothing better than seeing a client’s finished product launch successfully – I become their biggest supporter, cheering them on every step of the way.

How do you begin understanding a client’s decorative print vision?

Everything starts with a conversation – preferably a video call. Chemistry is important, so I want to make sure we connect personally before diving into the creative work. I’ll research their brand, discuss their likes and dislikes, and ask targeted questions until their vision clicks into place for me.

What’s your most rewarding client experience?

The magic moment happens again and again – when a client realises their decorative print dream isn’t just possible, but it’s coming alive through our collaboration. That transition from “I wish I could” to “I’m doing this” never gets old.

Feeling inspired? Whether you’re at the early ideas stage or ready to develop your collection, let’s explore how we can work together.

How do you maintain creativity with clients who have very specific ideas?

I actually prefer working within set parameters! Give me a blank sketchbook and I freeze, but give me a client brief and I’ll thrive. My strength lies in developing and refining existing ideas – taking the seed of an idea and helping it blossom into fully developed wallpaper, fabric, and homewares.

What’s your biggest challenge during the design process?

Reigning in the excitement! It’s easy to start spiralling into future ideas when we’re deep in the creative flow. I’ve learnt to gently guide us back to the current project while keep a “rainy day” list of all those brilliant tangible ideas for future development.

How do you ensure designs stay true to a client’s style?

I consider myself a design chameleon. By asking clients to share examples of things they love (and don’t love), I tweak my approach to their aesthetic preferences rather than imposing my own style.

What unexpected lesson have clients taught you?

Every collaboration has its own rhythm. Some clients want hands-on guidance at every step, others prefer to give general directions then see where I take it. Learning to adapt my process to different creative personalities has been invaluable.

Any dream projects on your creative horizon?

I have a bank of designs – created for demonstrations and creative escapism – that, one day, may develop into wallpaper, fabric, and homeware products. Whilst helping clients bring their decorative print visions to life remains my true passion and focus, I can’t help but imagine a future where these designs might blossom into a small collection of my own.

How do you help clients overcome creative blocks?

Often, stepping away is the solution. We might talk about something completely unrelatable to reset their perspective for a short time. Other times, rapid brainstorming helps unlock new directions. There’s always a way forward, it’s just finding the right path.

What’s your process for aligning a vision?

The initial conversation is just the starting point. I keep regular contact throughout the project with regular check-ins, making sure we’re always moving in the same direction. Design is a conversation, not a monologue.

Everything I share reflects how I approach wallpaper design, balancing creativity with technical decisions moving a design into production. I’ve brought that process, from first idea to seamless, production-ready repeat, together in my digital workbook, How to Create a Wallpaper Design.

Grounded in real studio experience, it’s designed to help you approach your own wallpaper designs with clarity, confidence and technical assurance.
