Case Study: Brand Packaging with Scents & Serenity

A case study showing the development of brand packaging with Scents & Serenity, a handcrafted fragrance brand. Refreshing brand guidelines, utilising colour theory, and tying the offering together with design, are all part of the brand packaging service I offer.

Brand packaging with Scents & Serenity

Scents & Serenity is a handcrafted fragrance brand offering a range of luxury products centred around mindful living. Inspired by the ethos of the brand, immediately I knew I wanted to work with Scents & Serenity to help elevate the packaging and refine the branding.

So, let us dive into the development and creation of the updated packaging for the Scents & Serenity fragrance oil range…

I knew the packaging design aspect of Scents & Serenity was in safe hands as soon as I had my first consultation with Lauren.

From start to finish Lauren made an inspirational and fun experience. It was great to see Lauren get excited about my products and apply her wealth of art and design knowledge to fit my brand.

I will look no further for all my design needs; thank you Lauren.

Brand packaging with Scents & Serenity – The brand

In brief, Scents & Serenity offer a range of carefully considered, hand-poured, and hand-crafted fragrance products. Georgina, the founder of the company, has created these products using high quality ingredients which are vegan as well as eco-friendly.

Scents & Serenity offer home products such as 100% soy wax candles, tea lights and wax melts; alongside handcrafted diffusers and refills, all centred around mindful living.

Brand packaging with Scents & Serenity – The brief

To begin, we started with a design meeting to go over our collaborative thoughts and ideas to see how we could elevate the product packaging. Georgina, the founder of Scents & Serenity, wanted a style which reflected her premium products and strong ethos for eco-conscious, mindful living.

In summary, there were three key factors I kept in mind during this project:

‣ All packaging and development work had to be created with an eco-conscious mind, including keeping on top of recycling, using recyclable materials, as well as sending Georgina any misprints to be used in new, innovative ways.

‣ As Scents & Serenity are a small start-up business, pricing was a key point. Through-out the process I kept clear communication with Georgina to ensure she was up to date with all costs and worked with her to achieve the price points she needed.

‣ Finally, the packaging is for premium products. I needed to make sure this was reflected into the packaging using a combination of high-quality design and a clever use of colour.

Brand guidelines

First, I worked on refining the brand guidelines. Understanding that Georgina would be using Canva meant I needed to make sure all assets would be available on the free-to-use online graphic tool. As a result, this allows Georgina the freedom to create her own marketing materials in the future.

Next, I refreshed the Scents & Serenity logo by re-drawing the motif to match the handcrafted ethos of the brand.

Together with the refreshed logo, I used my surface pattern skills to create a two-tone pattern inspired by the leaf motif in the logo. This pattern offered an additional asset which could be used for marketing and to create further brand awareness.

With the brand guidelines refined and ready, it was time to begin developing the packaging.

Brand packaging with Scents & Serenity – The products

Scents & Serenity offer a variety of products over three ranges.

The hero range

This is the core range of the brand. A combination of eight innovative blends by Georgina offered as candles, diffusers, wax melts, and more.

Straightaway, I knew I wanted the focus of this hero packaging to be promoting brand awareness. To that end, I used the two-tone pattern as the focal point of this packaging.

Then, I used colour to differentiate between the blends.

The premium range

Alongside the hero range, Scents & Serenity offer a premium range made up of four distinctive blends.

My challenge here was to create complementing packaging which also reflected the more premium style. This led to me adding unique illustrations for each blend alongside using the two-tone pattern as the secondary feature on the packaging.

Essential oil range

Another range by Scents & Serenity is the essential oil range. This range features six hero oils and four premium oil blends.

The packaging for the hero range of essential oils follows the same layout as the core range to keep familiarity between the hero products.

In contrast, the premium oil blends needed to be elevated further to ensure they portrayed their premium quality. To do this, I created a modern design layout using circular motifs, to complement the style of the Scents & Serenity logo and used the two-tone pattern as a way of tying the full offering together.

The importance of colour

Furthermore, colour plays a key role in the packaging for Scents & Serenity. I developed complementing colour palettes for both the core and premium ranges.

The core colour palette uses familiar, vibrant colours to tie the products together.

In contrast, the premium colour palettes use slightly muted tones to suggest their premium quality whilst complementing the hero colours.

Brand packaging with Scents & Serenity

In summary, I worked with Scents & Serenity to create cohesive, complementing packaging across all of the ranges.

Using a mix of high quality design and clever colour theory, I developed packaging with a strong brand identity to help promote and sell the hand-crafted fragrance products.

The final packaging included print ready box wraps, product labels, leaflets and guides, alongside digital assets and web optimised imagery.
